Instead of things being understood, we should have attached a formal contract to the proceedings. It would have read something like this:
Tied to each other in eternal friendship, the only conditions for breaking said friendship declared in the following clauses:
(a) I decide not to attend your wedding because I bruised my shoulder while skiing.
(b) I imply that your wife slept around a lot before she met you.
(c) I decide that, despite all our drunken discussions, money is quite important.
(d) I come to the conclusion that all those principles we learned from books are just make-believe.
